Gardai get more time to prepare 'blinding' case

GARDAI have been given extra time to prepare a book of evidence in relation to the partial blinding of a tourist.

Gary Ward (19) of Scurragh, Birr, Co Offaly, has denied a charge of assault causing harm at Keel's Arch in Birr, Co Offaly on August 4. The charge relates to injuries suffered by Birr native Marie Gauvin (58), who was struck in the eye by a bottle. Ms Gauvin had been on holidays from her home in Canada.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly requested a six-week extension due to the "complicated" nature of the investigation. Solicitor Bernadette Owens asked Judge Catherine Staines to remove a curfew on Mr Ward in order to facilitate family obligations. The judge agreed. Ward is scheduled to appear before Tullamore District Court on January 22.
