Detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Co Mayo have renewed their appeal for witnesses.

A 26-year-old was gunned down at a petrol station on the outskirts of Castlebar on the afternoon of December 18.

The man, who was shot a number of times at the scene on Moneen Road, was rushed to Mayo General Hospital where he died later that day.

Gardai said a dark coloured estate car was seen leaving the area at the time of the shooting.

"The vehicle sought in relation to this murder is described as a BMW 330 touring car," gardai said in their fresh appeal.

"It has a 3.3-litre diesel engine and it is a graphite grey in colour.

"Anyone who may have witnessed or can assist the gardai in relation to this murder or who may have any sightings of this vehicle are asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station."
