Garda who was killed on duty is honoured
THE brother of a garda killed by a criminal paid an emotional tribute to his courage as he was honoured yesterday.
Gda Gary McLoughlin (24) was killed in December 2009 when Martin McDermott crashed a stolen car into his Garda vehicle.
Gda McLoughlin's mother Una wept as tributes were paid to her son for his courage.
His older brother Enda told the special meeting of Donegal County Council that the family felt a huge sense of pride that Gda McLoughlin's three years at Buncrana garda station were being honoured.
"It means that Gary will never be forgotten by the people of Donegal. That means a great deal to us," said Mr McLoughlin.
"The people of Donegal have given us huge support and this is a day of celebration and commemoration," he added as his parents Noel and Una and Gda McLoughlin's girlfriend Shauna Bradley looked on.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said the force was proud that the council had bestowed the Civic Commemorative Honour.
Mayor Noel McBride told the Irish Independent: "We bestowed this honour on Gary so that his family know that the good people of Donegal cherished the work he did here."
Mrs McLoughlin was presented with a specially commissioned silver replica of the Donegal crest made by artist Geraldine Hannigan.
Her son died just hours after the incident and his killer McDermott was jailed for eight years for manslaughter.
There was uproar in February when McDermott escaped from Loughan House open prison. He was recaptured later by the PSNI.
