Garda station gets new life as ambulance base

ONE of the 31 rural garda stations listed for closure by Justice Minister Alan Shatter is to get a new lease of life as a regional ambulance base.

It is planned to have the new ambulance station in Loughlynn, Co Roscommon – which will serve west Roscommon and east Mayo – operational by the end of March.

Preparations are being made to fit it out with information and communication technology, according to Roscommon Dail deputy Frank Feighan.

Initially the ambulance centre will operate on a phased basis before progressing to a full-time service.
