Gardaí seize €25k worth of fake football merchandise during Man United match
Gardaí seized €25,000 worth of counterfeit football merchandise during Man United' visit to Dublin this week, which will now be destroyed.
Gardaí seized approximately 225 hats, 200 placards, 140 flags and 2,220 scarf’s as part of the planned operation during the Manchester United v Sampdoria match.
Representatives from Manchester United and Adida, along with gardaí and Dublin City Council carried out inspections of 21 vendors in the area.
Some of the merchandise was also branded with the Liverpool FC logo in anticipation of their clash against Athletic Bilbao.
Gardaí warned that there are health and safety concerns around counterfeit goods and said the sale of such goods helps to fund organised crime.
"The ongoing cooperation between various elements of law enforcement will continue, the objective being to stop counterfeit and sub standard products affecting the trade of genuine branded products," Detective Superintendent George Kyne said.
"We will also continue to work with industry to ensure their intellectual property rights are protected in this regard."
Prosecutions are expected to follow this week's seizure.
