Garda quizzed after seizure of cocaine

A GARDA was last night being questioned by detectives after the seizure of a quantity of cocaine.

His arrest followed lengthy inquiries by detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation into allegations he had been involved with illegal drugs.

The garda had been under observation by the bureau for some time.

The arrest was made after the garda was seen meeting with a group of men in Finglas in west Dublin yesterday morning.

Gardai carried out a search and recovered a small quantity of cocaine.

The garda was detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act and taken for questioning to Kevin Street station, where he was still being held last night over alleged possession of cocaine.

The garda is based in a station on the southside of the capital and has been in the force for a number of years. He was suspended pending the outcome of the inquiries.

He can be detained without charge for up to seven days.

The investigation is being led by Detective Superintendent John McMahon, from the Dublin metropolitan headquarters at Harcourt Square.
