A family was left in a state of shock last week when they returned home to discover their two dogs had been stolen and their pet duck's neck had been snapped.

The horrific incident happened on May 4 when the family returned home to Ardee, Co Louth after a day out in Dublin.

Cupcake, the family's French Bulldog, had been locked safely in the garden shed while the other dog, Blackjack, was sitting outside the door.

When they arrived home, they noticed the shed door had been forced open and the gate was hanging on its hinges.

The thieves also forced their way into the family home and killed their children's pet duck.

Speaking to Independent.ie, mum-of-three Karen Byrne (31) described the culprits as "pure evil".

Her three children were "left in tears" following the incident.

"The kids are absolutely heartbroken. When we arrived home on Thursday evening, it was like walking into a horror movie," she said.

"My six-year-old son found his pet duck with its neck snapped - it was horrific."

Blackjack, who is a Jack Russell, was found the next day at the back of a neighbour's house, ten minutes down the road.

One of his back legs was broken and he was "very shaken".

Cupcake is still missing and the family are offering a "significant reward" for information on her whereabouts.

Gardaí said the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
