Gardaí are investigating all circumstances surrounding the death of a young woman found in a squat in Cork city centre.

The 22 year old woman, who is from Cork, was discovered in the premises off Sheares Street in Cork city centre early this morning.

Despite desperate attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene before she could be transferred to Mercy University Hospital (MUH).

The scene was immediately sealed off by gardaí to allow for a full forensic and technical examination.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau are expected to attend the scene later today.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a pathologist is due to attend the scene later this afternoon.

A full post-mortem examination will be conducted at Cork University Hospital (CUH) either this evening or early tomorrow morning.

Detailed toxicology tests will also be conducted. Gardaí stressed that the nature of their investigation will be determined by the post mortem results.

It is understood a number of people have been living at the squat over recent months.

The premises had been vacant for a period.

Several of those visiting the squat are known to have availed of homeless support services in the Cork area.

A number of those who frequented the squat are known to have suffered from serious alcohol and drug addiction problems.

Gardaí are now hoping to speak with anyone who may have had access to the flat over the past week.

Officers are also conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area to determine if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious.

The area also has a number of business premises and Gardaí will be examining CCTV security camera footage to determine the last movements of the deceased.
