Garda in pursuit is rammed off motorcycle

Ken Foy

A MOTORCYCLE garda was injured after a car rammed into him when he went on pursuit of a driver.

It is understood that the garda initially suspected one of the occupants in the car was armed with a shotgun.

Garda Peter O' Brien (31) was recovering from his injuries last night, while two suspected criminals were being quizzed at Kevin Street garda station.

Gda O'Brien was treated for leg injuries at St James's Hospital before being released last night.

The incident unfolded at around 2pm on Lennox Street in the Portobello area of the capital when Gda O'Brien thought he saw a suspect with a shotgun in a car.

After a short high-speed chase, the suspect reversed his car into the garda and knocked the officer off his bike.

However, reinforcements arrived and a passenger in the car was arrested by armed detectives.

The driver of the car – which was not stolen – then fled on foot, into a nearby flats complex.

The suspect was later arrested in a taxi in Drumcondra. No firearm has been recovered.

Gda O' Brien returned to work after being discharged from hospital.

The two suspects in custody last night are well known to officers and from the Tallaght area of the capital.
