Gardaí are concerned traumatised student Kym Owens will be unable to remember key information that could help catch her attacker.

The Maynooth University student, who remains in the intensive care unit of Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, has not yet given a statement to gardaí.

Gardaí are waiting for doctors at the hospital to give them permission to talk to the teenager from Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

Kym was attacked as she walked to her student accommodation in the Moyglare Abbey Estate after being dropped off in the town.

"It is a matter of deep concern that Kym may not remember exactly what happened," a senior source said last night.

"This is common enough in cases like this. She suffered a terrible ordeal.

"Whatever she does remember, if anything, may prove absolutely crucial to solving this horrific crime, but we will not be talking to her until she is ready."

Gardaí are still probing if her attacker may have been travelling on the bus with her from Monaghan.
