An investigation is underway following the burglary of a rural Garda station last weekend.

Gardaí confirmed that Lifford Garda station in county Donegal was broken into Saturday, September 5, in the early hours of the morning.

It is understood the station was empty at the time of the break-in, and that a number of Garda items were taken – including police radios and items relating to Garda uniforms.

According to the Donegal Daily, the burglar spent almost two hours in the station unaware he was being filmed by the building’s CCTV system.

"We can confirm that officers at Lifford are investigating a burglary at Lifford Garda station,” a Garda spokesperson.

“CCTV is being viewed as part of the investigation.”

Garda were unable to confirm reports that an arrest had been made in Derry in connection to the break-in.

Anyone with information about the burglary has been asked to contact the Lifford Garda Station  on 749141000 or the Garda District Headquarters on 074 91 67100.
