Gardaí have started a dig for the remains of a missing doctor after a letter was sent claiming to know the exact location of her body.

A letter received from a person some weeks ago claims to know the exact location where missing 46-year-old doctor Deirdre O'Flaherty is buried.

Ms O'Flaherty, from Strabane, in Co Tyrone, was reported missing on January 11, 2009, at Moville.

The excavation, which is expected to last up to five days, is between Rathmullan and Kerrykeel in Co Donegal.

It is a very remote area of bogland but popular with dog-walkers.

A number of gardaí using a mini-digger moved onto the site on Monday.

It is understood gardaí are treating the claim as genuine but don't know if there are any remains at the location.

Mystery has always surrounded Ms O'Flaherty's disappearance. Her car was found at Kinnego Beach and she was known to have suffered from depression leading to suspicions she had taken her own life. She had been staying at a holiday home with her husband and their children.
