Gardaí 'confronted by men with iron bars' when trying to seize suspected stolen car
A group of men armed with weapons confronted two gardaí in Mayo when they attempted to seize a car which was believed to have been stolen.
Gardaí were involved in a high-speed chase with the car after receiving reports that it had been driving dangerously in the Ballinrobe area on Sunday.
The Mayo News reports that up to six men, some who were armed with iron bars, squared up to gardaí when they tried to seize the BMW.
One of the men then got into the suspected stolen car and drove off.
Neither the driver or car has since been located.
The incident took place at 2am on Monday morning.
In a statement, a garda spokesman told Independent.ie: "As a result of gardaí receiving reports of a car driving dangerously in and around Ballinrobe. Gardaí observed a car in New Estate, Lough Mask Road, Ballinrobe. The car then drove off at speed. Investigations are ongoing and no arrests at this stage."
It follows an attack on two members of the force in a separate incident in Claremorris, Co Mayo on Sunday morning.
While out on mobile patrol, the two officers, one male and one female, stopped a group of youths around 4.30am and were assaulted.
The male garda was treated in Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar.
He was later released but is understood to be receiving ongoing medical treatment.
Three male suspects (aged 18, 21, and 22) were later arrested and brought to Castlebar and Westport garda stations, where they can be held until Friday under Section of 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Anyone who witnessed either incident is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
