Gardaí arrest man in connection to alleged Dublin nightclub assault
Gardaí have arrested a man in connection to an alleged assault outside a popular Dublin nightclub in the early hours of Sunday.
The arrested man, aged in his early thirties, is currently detained at Swords Garda Station. He was arrested this morning.
The victim, named locally as Christy Fitzgerald, was set upon outside a popular nightclub in Swords in the early hours of yesterday morning. He is originally from Finglas, Dublin, but has spent the past number of years in Drogheda, Co Louth.
Fitzgerald, who is a father in his 30s, was believed to be at a birthday celebration before the attack took place.
Emergency services were called to the scene at the Wright Venue in Airside Retail Park, Swords, at 3.40am. Fitzgerald was then taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where he was last night said to be gravely ill.
The scene of the attack was sealed off pending a forensic examination.
Fitzgerald is known to gardaí and was sentenced for five years in the past for his part in a robbery in 2002.
However, the motive for the attack in the early hours of yesterday is not yet clear.
Neighbours of Fitzgerald in the Termon Abbey area of Drogheda said they were shocked at the news.
"He's a good neighbour with a lot of friends. It is terrible news," said one man. "We have only just heard the news and are trying to take it in."
"I don't know him personally, just to say hello to, but he seems like a popular man and would be well known in the area," said another neighbour.
"He's a big guy, he must be 6ft tall, I'm surprised somebody would attack him," said one local man.
