The seizure of two loaded handguns by an elite Garda unit has been linked to a volatile criminal in west Dublin.

Three men last night remained in Garda custody, where they were being quizzed over the significant gun bust in Clondalkin on Thursday night.

One of the men, a 21-year-old, previously survived an attempt on his life after being shot in the head.

A 29-year-old man arrested is considered a violent criminal heavily involved with a local organised crime gang. Detectives recovered two loaded revolvers wrapped in cling film in the back garden of this individual's Clondalkin home.

A third man, also aged in his 20s, is an associate of the older criminal.

A Garda spokesman said that the operation was targeting "organised criminal activity" in west Dublin.

At 6pm on Thursday gardaí carried out a number of co-ordinated searches in the Shancastle Park area of Clondalkin.

The operation was led by detectives from the Lucan and Ronanstown Garda stations.

They were backed up by the Emergency Response Unit and the Armed Support Unit because of the criminals being targeted in the investigation.

Three men were arrested and are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
