ONE of the last senior members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang not behind bars was arrested last night over the seizure of a major consignment of heroin.
The well-known criminal, who is in his 40s, was arrested on the outskirts of Limerick yesterday after the discovery of the drug.
It is believed that the heroin recovered by officers is worth €150,000.
The drugs were found on the grounds of Delmege House on the northside of the city yesterday afternoon.
The arrest of the gang member is a major success for gardai. He has been under constant surveillance by officers monitoring Limerick's criminal gangs in recent months and is suspected of drug trafficking on the northside of the city.
He is closely aligned to the Ryan brothers -- Kieran and Eddie -- who received lengthy jail terms this summer for the possession of a handgun.
He has come under attack from the Keane criminal gang and narrowly escaped with his life when an assailant with an AK-47 opened fire on him several years ago.
Two other men -- aged 18 and 20 and both from Moyross -- were arrested with the criminal.
