FRIENDS of a young Galway man who requires round-the-clock care after being hit with a brick have rallied around in a sporting attempt to raise funds to bring him home from hospital.

Shane Grogan (24), has been in a near-vegetative state since he was attacked in his hometown of Tuam, Co Galway, in August 2012.

Since then, he has needed 24-hour care and remains in University Hospital Galway. His family are now raising funds to build a customised unit for Shane at their Tuam home.

His friends have gathered dozens of pieces of sporting memorabilia signed by the likes of Maradona, the All Blacks, the winning Dublin All Ireland team, the German and English national soccer teams and several Premier League teams.

More than 50 pieces were collected by Shane's close friend Simon Tierney and will be auctioned off in the new year to raise the vital funds.
