Friendless 'Ming' finds a pal in Noonan
THERE was a rare and undoubtedly fleeting moment of harmony between two denizens of the Dail on Thursday. Michael Noonan was taking questions in the chamber, and Luke 'Ming' Flanagan was looking for information as to why the Revenue Commissioners were not investigating a particular organisation for non-payment of VAT.
There was potential for a big scrap – Ming (TD) vs The Merciless (Taxman).
Instead, the Finance Minister admitted that he was stymied.
"I know you'll find it very unsatisfactory, and I find it unsatisfactory as well," he said, explaining that confidentiality laws "preclude the Revenue Commissioners from providing taxpayer-specific information to third parties, including the Minister for Finance," he told Ming. "I think it's something we need to have a cup of coffee about," he suggested.
"I'm glad someone still wants to have one with me," muttered Ming the Mateless.
