Fresh water flown to island

A Coast Guard helicopter yesterday flew 900 bottles of water to Inis Oirr, which has a population of 300, the smallest of the three Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

Last week Galway County Council designated the island's water supply as unsafe and supplies of bottled drinking water had almost run out by the time the helicopter arrived.

Householders had been told the water was not even fit to be boiled due to chloride contamination.

The helicopter was called on as bad weather had prevented the ferry from Rossaveal from travelling in recent days.
