Four in 10 pay for holiday with loans or cards

THOUSANDS of consumers went into the red to pay for their summer holiday this year.

A survey by lastminute.com shows that 40pc of Irish holidaymakers relied on loans or credit cards to pay for their trip, while 14pc dipped into emergency savings.

A lucky one in five holidaymakers were able to pay with their most recent pay cheque, with women and young people more likely to do this.

Over a quarter save specifically for their holidays, the survey carried out online by iReach among 700 people reveals.

Mark Maddock from lastminute.com said it made sense to choose holidays that avoided a financial hangover.

"A top tip is to book outside of peak season whenever possible and look to take advantage of last-minute bargains," he said.
