Found: Good home for stray apostrophe

John Walshe Education Editor

A missing apostrophe was finally located by a third-level college yesterday.

Embarrassed college administrators only realised it had gone AWOL when they read about it in the Irish Independent.

The photograph showed a massive poster outside the ultra-modern National College of Ireland building in Dublin's financial services centre urging potential students to get a copy of the college's prospectus, which read: 'Get it while its hot'. The photograph accompanied an article by Kim Bielenberg drawing attention to the decline in the standard of spelling, grammar and punctuation among students.

The college authorities reacted with commendable speed. "We'll hold our hands up and assert that a key part of learning is learning from your mistakes, and we like to think we know a thing or two about learning. So we thank the Irish Independent for this valuable lesson and attach a picture to show that it's a lesson well learned." Indeed.
