Fota snaps up Brazilian name for tapir
The wait is finally over for a five-week-old Brazilian tapir calf who was missing a name.
The newborn was named Thiago by wardens at Fota Wildlife Park in Cork yesterday.
Baby Thiago took no notice of the fuss while he happily played with his mother Maya and father Bazil while lead warden Aiden Rafferty and his fellow wardens picked his name from a shortlist of 15. Mr Rafferty said the deciding factor in the end was staying true to the tapir's Brazilian origins.
The winning name was suggested by Aisling O'Meara from Dublin, who will now get to go on a special trip to the Fota.
