Former judge named military Ombudsman
A FORMER military judge has been appointed as the new Ombudsman for the Defence Forces.
Tony McCourt succeeds senior counsel Paulyn Marrinan Quinn, who had been the Ombudsman since the post was created in 2005.
The Irish Independent previously disclosed that Defence Minister Alan Shatter would downgrade the post. The salary was reduced from €104,327 full-time to €62,596 for three days a week.
Ms Marrinan Quinn was entitled to apply for the position but she expressed surprise at the decision to downgrade the office.
Mr McCourt was selected from open competition by the Public Appointments Service.
