Former Indo man passes away

One of the longest-serving former members of the Irish Independent staff died yesterday.

Dermot O'Byrne, who was 92, worked in the circulation department for 47 years.

A keen sportsman in his youth, he won many amateur honours in track and field, soccer, cricket, tennis and snooker.

A native of Drumcondra, Dublin, he lived most of his life in Artane. He is survived by his wife Angela, his son Declan, himself a former Irish Independent journalist, and daughter Carol.

His funeral Mass will take place in Our Lady of Mercy church, Artane, at 10am on Thursday, followed by burial at Balgriffin cemetery.
