A woman aged 82 who died in a lunchtime road accident yesterday has been named as Eithne Gallagher from Ballyshannon, Co Donegal.

The fatal crash happened at Creevykeel, near Cliffoney, Co Sligo. Mrs Gallagher was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, the former Ulster and Donegal GAA star Jim Gallagher (86).

He was being treated last night at Sligo General Hospital for injuries received in the incident with a pick-up truck.

The driver of the truck was treated for shock in hospital.

Gardai said both vehicles were facing towards Bundoran on the main Sligo-Donegal Road. They believe the truck was parked on the left of a straight stretch when the car crashed into its rear.

Emergency services had to use cutting equipment to free the car occupants.

A close family friend said: "They did everything together. They were very close and frequently used to travel to Mass five miles away at Rossnowlagh."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sligo garda station 071-9157000, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
