Former dean of St. Patrick's Victor Griffin passes away
The former dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Victor Griffin, has passed away at the age of 92.
He had been the dean of the cathedral from his election in 1968 until his retirement in 1991.
During the period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, he was a strong advocate for civil rights and for pluralism.
In 1983, he spoke out in opposition to the eighth amendment to the constitution, during the referendum campaign. He also called for integrated education in schools.
Dean Griffin's wife Daphne Mitchell, a teacher, died of multiple sclerosis in 1998.
They had twin sons Kevin and Timothy, born in 1959, who both joined An Garda Síochána.
He passed away peacefully at his home in Limavady, Co Derry yesterday morning.
His remains will be removed to Christ Church Limavady at 4pm on Sunday with funeral to take place at 11am on Monday, followed by cremation.
