TEAMMATES of a young Aran Island footballer dedicated their Gaeltacht football final win to his memory after learning of his death in a car crash in Australia.
Uinseon McCarron (24), who had been working on a farm in Australia, died on Saturday evening following a crash in New South Wales as he returned home from a tag rugby match.
His grieving parents, Vincent and Barbara, from Inis Mor, asked the football club Uinseon played for until his emigration two years ago – Oileain Arainn – to go ahead with yesterday's Gaeltacht Football Final against Renvyle in his memory.
Arthur Flaherty, a selector with Oilean Arainn and a relative of the dead man, said the players had been undecided after learning the sad news of his death.
"His mother said she'd love (it) to go ahead," said Mr Flaherty, after they won 1-10 to 2-6. "They played it in his honour."
As well as his parents, the young man is mourned by a sister and brothers. The family is making preparations to bring Uinseon's body home for burial.
