Football stars to play exhibition match in honour of two Bray firefighters

A Bray firefighters' team will play a remembrance charity football match next Sunday, the 26th, in memory of the two firefighters who were killed while battling a blaze three years ago. They will play the John Aldridge XI, including Andy Cole, Jason McAteer, John Aldridge, Lee Sharpe, David May, Alan Kennedy and Phil Neal.

The match, at the Carlisle Grounds in Bray, is in aid of the Laura Lynn House at Children's Sunshine Home (Ireland's first children's hospice) and the Irish Autism Association. The family fun day will feature demonstrations by the Defence Forces and Army Pipe Band, as well as exhibitions of kickboxing and Irish dancing. The match kicks off at 2pm. No commemoration for 'Hitler' duke

A proposal to reunite the head and arm of the statue of the Duke of Cumberland -- the Butcher of Culloden -- in Birr Library, has been rejected by the local town council. The statue was pulled off a pillar in the town in the 1920s. The head is in the possession of Lord and Lady Rosse in Birr Castle, while the arm is in the town library.

The local Georgian Society had asked for the two pieces to be reunited for an exhibition in the library but the proposal was rejected by councillors, one of whom commented that the duke was "like Hitler" and should not be commemorated in any way.
