The cherry blossom trees in the grounds of Dublin's Farmleigh House provided a suitably colourful background for a traditional Japanese celebration yesterday.

Hanami is an annual spring event in Japan where friends and family gather together for outdoors flower viewing parties - typically involving eating picnics under cherry blossom trees.

Hundreds of members of Dublin's Japanese community gathered in the grounds of Farmleigh yesterday to enjoy the abundant blossoms, but also to experience taiko drumming and a traditional Soran Bushi dance performance.

There was also a traditional sake barrel opening ceremony.
