Fleadh casts spell on thousands

UP to a quarter-of-a-million people are expected to flock to the world's largest celebration of traditional Irish culture at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann this weekend.

Thousands of spectators have already visited Cavan town for the annual 10-day celebration featuring an assortment of music, song and traditional Irish dance.

Participants include trad legends Donal Lunny, Paddy Glackin, Liam O'Flynn as well as popular singer-songwriter John Spillane.

Yesterday's "Green Day" celebrations included a concert featuring musical instruments fashioned from recycled appliances.

The event also attracted an assortment of street musicians and buskers. And among them, dressed like the wizard Gandalf from 'The Lord of the Rings', bodhran player Colin Sinan entertained the crowds.

The party wraps up on Monday.
