A five-year-old Cork girl has drowned in a lake in Germany while visiting relatives.

Emmy Sophia Eckert (5) died in an incident at a holiday complex in Dessau last week.

It is the second holiday tragedy involving a child from Cork in the space of a week.

Avery James Green (3) died after a dream Costa Blanca holiday for his extended family ended in a nightmare.

The little boy from Mallow was found unresponsive in a swimming pool close to the Aguamarinas complex in Cabo Roig, outside Torrevieja, just before 9am on Monday.

Emmy Sophia, who lived in Ballincollig, Co Cork, with her parents, Andreas and Darlene Eckert, and her three siblings, died on August 8.

The family were staying at a lake resort in Dessau when the incident happened.

Emmy Sophia was found unresponsive in the water but was dragged to the shore by other holidaymakers and lifeguards.

Desperate efforts were made to revive her at the lakeside before she was rushed to a nearby hospital where the five-year-old was later pronounced dead.

Parents in Ballincollig were notified by text yesterday that the Scoil Mhuire pupil had died and that her funeral arrangements would take place this weekend.

Craig Ledbetter, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church of Ballincollig, said everyone in the town was deeply shocked by the tragedy.
