Five held as jewel shop raided
A female garda leaving duty at Balbriggan garda station in north Co Dublin followed five men later arrested in connection with the robbery of a jewellers in the town on Friday afternoon.
The garda was driving when she saw five young men flagging a taxi on the outskirts of the town near a crashed car. She followed in her car, alerting colleagues who joined the pursuit and stopped the taxi on the M1 and arrested the five passengers.
The Garda Press Office said four men entered Goldsmith's jewellers on Drogheda Street at around 5pm on Friday and threatened staff with hammers before escaping in a black saloon car. The raiders smashed display cases and ransacked the shop causing thousands of euro worth of damage.
The five, one aged in his 40s and four teenagers, were taken to Ballymun, Coolock and Balbriggan garda stations. Their periods of arrest were extended yesterday afternoon.
