SPECIALIST cleaning contractors will need five days to empty a terraced house packed four feet deep with almost a tonne of rubbish.

Both the gardai and the HSE are now liaising over the discovery in a three-bedroom house at St Joseph's Terrace in Passage West, Co Cork.

The HSE said it was aware of the matter and was monitoring the situation -- but that the issue was primarily one for Cork County Council.

The property was vacated in June -- but neighbours only discovered last week that the house was packed with rotting domestic rubbish.

A bedroom of the privately owned property was found to contain more than 300 used nappies.

The council yesterday arranged for specialist cleaning contractors to begin work at the premises.

The Irish Independent understands that this move required the permission of the former occupants.
