Five arrested after garda car rammed
FIVE men have been arrested after a drunk motorist repeatedly rammed into two vehicles including a garda patrol car.
Gardai in Ennis were last night questioning five men -- all members of the Travelling community -- following the latest incident between feuding families on a busy road in the Clare town.
It is understood that shortly after 6pm yesterday, a drunk motorist was driving a vehicle at the Maid of Erin roundabout on the northside of Ennis when he spotted members of an opposing family in a nearby car.
He immediately rammed the other vehicle with his own.
However, a garda patrol car was also travelling on the busy road at the same time and officers attempted to intervene.
In response, the drunk motorist then rammed the patrol car while two officers were inside it.
The drunk motorist was arrested at the scene. Four other men were also arrested at the roundabout for public order offences.
A number of weapons including an axe were taken from one of the damaged vehicles.
More arrests in the region are likely following the latest incident amongst feuding members of the Travelling community in Ennis.
Investigating gardai believe yesterday's ramming incidents are connected to violence in the town last week.
Last Thursday, a 16-year-old boy was hospitalised after a row broke out among Travellers while a wedding took place at Ennis Cathedral.
Following that incident, officers recovered several weapons including a slash hook and a pickaxe handle. Two men were later arrested after a van was damaged in the Mayville housing estate.
