Fire death probe being upgraded to murder

GARDA are expected to upgrade to murder an investigation into the death of a man whose body was discovered after a fire at his home early on Thursday.

A post-mortem examination on the body of James Cahillane is understood to have shown he had severe head injuries consistent with blows from a blunt instrument.

The status of the investigation has initially been upgraded to suspicious, but gardai are likely to upgrade it further to murder today.

The body of Mr Cahillane (58), an electrician who lived alone at Ardraw, Beaufort, in Co Kerry, was found near the hallway of the house after fire crews battled the blaze

It is understood Mr Cahillane arrived home some time earlier after a night spent socialising.
