Figures show jobs target is way off
NEW unemployment figures show the Government is a long way off meeting its target of getting 75,000 long-term unemployed back to work within three years, writes Aideen Sheehan.
The number of people signing on the live register stabilised this month at 432,907. But the numbers out of work for over a year rose by 7pc in the past 12 months.
The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed (INOU) warned that long-term unemployment had grown to over 43pc of the total -- close to half of all those who were out of work. "The reality is that the longer someone is unemployed the harder it is to get back to work, so it's vital the Government implement strong policies and supports to help people," said INOU spokeswoman Brid O'Brien.
