Fianna Fáil appoints Billy Kelleher as Director of Elections
Fianna Fáil has appointed their health spokesman Billy Kelleher as Director of Elections for the General Election campaign.
Mr Kelleher will take over from Pat Carey who announced his was stepping aside last night as a result of “rumour and innuendo” linking him to media reports of a garda investigation into child sex abuse by a former Government Minister.
In a statement confirming the appointment, party leader Micheál Martin thanked Mr Carey for his work on the campaign during the past month.
“I would like to thank Pat and acknowledge his work on the campaign to date,” he said.
He added: "Billy was first elected to the Dáil in 1997 and has a wide range of experience, having served as Minister of State for Trade and Commerce and Minister of State for Labour Affairs.”
Mr Kelleher takes up the role with immediate effect.
