Fine Gael TD Sean Conlan could not be reached by his own party since a brawl in a bar he owns resulted in a young man being stabbed with a glass.

Fine Gael spent the last two days trying to contact Mr Conlan about the garda probe into the incident.

However, senior party figures, including secretary general Tom Curran, have not been able to reach the deputy. There was growing frustration within Fine Gael over the inability to contact Mr Conlan to discuss what happened on Sunday night at the bar he is leasing in Ballybay, Co Monaghan.

Mr Conlan is due to go before a selection convention on September 8 alongside Minister Heather Humphreys and TD Joe O'Reilly.

Gardaí confirmed a man in his 20s was allegedly assaulted by a man in his 40s in Ballybay on Sunday evening. It is understood the brawl resulted in the younger man receiving stitches on his arm after he was stabbed with a glass.
