THE application to join Fine Gael by former Fianna Fail candidate, PD TD and Independent MEP Pat Cox will be ratified tonight.

Mr Cox is joining the party to try to become the Fine Gael candidate for the presidential election. The party's national executive will sign off on his membership application tonight.

The former president of the European Parliament formally applied to be a member of the St Luke's branch of Fine Gael in Cork North Central.

The current membership of the St Luke's branch includes newly elected TD Dara Murphy and prominent Cork businessman Jerry Carey.

A source said the application by Mr Cox was welcomed in the constituency organisation.
