FF red faced as TR forks out ?15,800

Fionnan Sheahan Political Correspondent FIANNA Fail councillor Tom Allen, better known as the country and western singer TR Dallas, was named as a tax defaulter yesterday.

In the latest embarrassment for Fianna Fail, the Westmeath county councillor paid ?15,878 to the taxman for under-declaration of income tax arising out of the Revenue Offshore Assets Investigation.

Mr Allen joins Denis Foley and Michael Collins on the list of FF politicians caught for tax offences. He now faces possible disciplinary action by Fianna Fail.

A close friend of FF TD Donie Cassidy, Mr Allen blamed "bad advice" from a bank official for his tax troubles. "As far as I am concerned, I paid tax on that money twice now. A lot of people are going to be in same boat as a result of bad advice from bank managers.

"That has me in the situation in which I am in today," he told the Irish Independent. Mr Allen sprang to fame in the early 1980s with the hit "Who Shot JR Ewing?", based on the hugely popular 'Dallas' TV series.

Last night, a FF spokesperson said the party "will be treating the matter seriously". It would be talking to Mr Allen to clarify the facts of the case.

It is understood that Mr Allen's tax problems arose from an offshore account he opened in the Isle of Man through a bank in Ireland.
