FF election candidate Thomas Byrne slams Coalition for ghost estate tax

The decision to include huge numbers of people living in ghost estates in the property tax "shows how detached from the reality of life FG and Labour are", said FF's Meath East by-election candidate Thomas Byrne yesterday.

"The fact that the problem of unfinished estates has been sorted came as news to many people. Not least of all to those who are living in estates which are still a mess but which are now being asked to pay some of the highest family home tax rates in the country," he said.

"Excluding seven out of eight of those who had previously been exempted, the only explanation that the Government could offer was that the issues at these unfinished estates have been addressed," he added.

"Ordinary low and middle-income families are bearing a disproportionate burden under this Government. They've given much already in response to the crisis and all they ask in return from legislators is some fairness," he said.
