Fears Waterford may change from city to town status
WATERFORD fears losing its city status as two councils are merged to become one municipal authority.
Reforms announced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan mean the city and county councils will become one. Councillors and campaigners reacted angrily to the plan and vowed resistance.
Independent councillor and former city mayor, Mary Roche, said Waterford, pictured above, is being "downgraded" and will no longer be on a par with other cities such as Dublin, Cork and Galway.
"800 former mayors are spinning in their graves," she said.
