FEARS are growing over the future of a vital ferry service to the main Aran Island of Inis Mór.

The only ferry to the largest of the islands could end in mid January after the company running the service indicated it would terminate the route.

Comharchumann Forbartha Arann Teo said it has received notice from Island Ferries Teoranta which runs the service that it will cease from January 16 next.

The company which runs as Aran Island Ferries failed to comment on the reports.

An emergency meeting has been held to address the concerns.

The decision follows the company losing a Supreme Court appeal relating to harbour charges and a passenger charge.

Services to Inis Meain and Inis Oirr will not be affected.
