Police in Australia have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a 29-year-old Irishwoman in Melbourne.

Jill Meagher from Drogheda went missing after leaving a pub in the Brunswick area of the city around 1.30am (local time) on Saturday, where she had been socialising with work colleagues.

She emigrated to Australia three years ago with her husband Tom, who is from Cabinteely in Dublin, and works for ABC radio in Melbourne.

Mr Meagher told RTE News that a colleague last saw his wife as she left the bar, which was only ‘‘a few minutes’’ away from their home.

“She was out with work friends and I wasn’t there. She was out quite late with a friend. He left and she was going to walk home on her own and that was the last time anyone has seen her or had contact with her.”

A Facebook page – Help Us Find Jill Meagher ? has been set up in the hope of raising awareness while ABC presenters and programmes have posted messages on Twitter.

Detective Sergeant Steve Bull said the disappearance was out of character and that there were now concerns for her safety.

“We have reviewed some CCTV footage but it hasn’t taken the enquiry any further. We’re still at a loss as to what might have happened to her.”

He also said that there were no concerns that Ms Meagher had too much to drink.
