UP to 20 militant anti-G8 protesters may already be in Ireland and planning to breach security around world leaders in Co Fermanagh next week, writes Greg Harkin.

Security sources say ports and airports have been monitored for several weeks in advance of the G8 summit, which begins on Monday at the Lough Erne Golf Resort.

However, they believe that up to 20 of the most militant protesters may already be here.

Meanwhile, dressed in natty suits and sporting the tell-tale American flag pins on their lapels, an advance guard of US Secret Service agents "swooped" on one of Dublin's premier hotels in preparation for a visit from America's First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Ms Obama is expected to stay at the five-star Shelbourne Hotel with her daughters Malia (14) and Sasha (12) while the US president attends the summit.

At least eight secret service agents were spotted at the hotel yesterday checking out security arrangements after several people carriers drew up outside the entrance on St Stephen's Green.

Ms Obama is expected to stay in the hotel's luxurious Princess Grace suite.
