Fears for 101 posts at insurer

Majella O'Sullivan

There were fears for over 100 jobs yesterday at a health insurance company.

A total of 101 jobs are at risk at the plant in Castleisland, Co Kerry, the biggest employer in the town.

Employees at the Aetna plant were told on Tuesday that the company had begun a review of its operations and would be making an announcement in a month.

Aetna, which is one of the largest health benefit insurers in the world, is to shed 200 jobs from operations in Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and in the US.

"We have notified our employees of outsourcing proposals and that we're going to be undertaking a 30-day consultation process with employee representatives," a spokesman said.

It is understood the proposals include plans to outsource its customer service and claims departments.

Aetna has been in Castleisland for more than 20 years. The Kerry plant mainly deals with processing claims. Employees were reluctant to talk to media yesterday.
