A father-of-three is missing off the south-west coast of the country after a boat he was in capsized this afternoon.

The incident occurred off the coast of Templenoe, four miles outside Kenmare today.

Another man who was in the boat at the time managed to swim ashore to a small island off the coast where he was rescued.

He was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

Emergency services were alerted just after 2pm this afternoon.

A search involving the Shannon-based helicopter, Castletownbere Coastguard and Kerry Fire Service got underway for the missing man.

The search has been called off for the evening but will begin first thing in the morning.

Conditions are expected to be difficult as Met Eireann forecasts 130km/h winds over the next 24 hours.

RTE reports that the missing man is understood to be from the Kenmare area and is a father of three in his fifties.
