This is Ireland's latest murder victim who was stabbed to death following a gruesome attack which gardai believe was linked to a row over a woman.

Graham McKeever (32), a father-of-one was discovered unconscious with several stab wounds to his body outside an apartment block in Deerpark Avenue, Tallaght at 4.40am this morning.

Emergency services were alerted but despite the best efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, aged in her 30s was also in the apartment at the time of the attack but is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Investigating detectives at Tallaght garda station are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the murder.

"Gardai believe they know the identity of the attacker but he has not yet been arrested. They are currently in the process of tracking him down.

"It was a particularly gruesome murder," a source said.

Gardai believe that a lone male broke into the Tallaght property shortly after 4am and began viciously attacking Mr McKeever.

The victim is understood to have made an attempt to flee the property but was caught by the assailant and stabbed several times.

It is understood that Graham McKeever had been staying at the Deerpark property with a woman and a child but was not permanently living there.

It is not known if the young child was in the apartment at the time of the violent killing.

The victim's body was removed from the scene shortly after 12pm this afternoon as detectives carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Young children looked on as the victim's body was removed from the apartment before being taken to the city mortuary.

Officers from the Garda Technical Bureau also carried out a forensic examination of the apartment and a small area near the front door.

One local woman living in the estate said she wasn't aware of what had happened until she awoke to a large garda presence on the road.

"The first I realised something happened was when I looked out the window and saw garda cars all over the road, I knew something was up straight away. I didn't really know the people living in the apartment but I wouldn't say there was anything unusual about them," she said.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardai wish to appeal to witnesses who may have been in the Deerpark Avenue or may have heard a disturbance between 4am and 5.30am this morning the 18th February to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station on 01 666 6000".

Graham McKeever is the second person to be stabbed to death in the west Dublin suburb in a matter of weeks.

On January 5, Reece Cullen (16) was fatally wounded following a knife attack at a house in Kilclare Crescent.

A youth and a 29-year-old woman have been arrested but no one has yet been charged in relation to the murder.
