Two motorcyclists have died in separate road accidents in Co Roscommon and Co Down over the weekend.

In Co Roscommon, a man in his 50s died yesterday afternoon after his motorcycle was in collision with a car during a charity motorcycle run.

The accident occurred at around 1pm at Summerhill, Athlone.

He was named locally as Kieran Kenny, originally from Ferbane, Co Offaly, and he was living in Monksland, Athlone. He was married with adult daughters.

He was treated at the scene before he was taken to University Hospital Galway, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Road diversions were put in place as Garda investigators examined the scene.

Gardaí are asking for anyone who has any information to come forward and contact Clonark garda station.

One local man said last night: "He was travelling with a group of motorcyclists on a charity run. The whole community is in shock."

Meanwhile, in Co Down, a 66-year-old motorcyclist has died following a collision in Newry yesterday.

The motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a Land Rover Discovery, which was towing a caravan, on the Warrenpoint Road.
