Father and daughter (5) killed in Tralee house fire

A 30-year-old man and his five-year-old daughter have died in a fire at their home in Tralee, Co Kerry.

They have been named locally as Anthony and Nadine O’Brien.

The girl’s mother, 29-year-old Kelly O’Brien, escaped from the house by jumping from an upstairs window and is being treated in Kerry General Hospital in Tralee for a broken leg.

The fire broke out at the semi-detached house in Killeen Heights in Oakpark at around 2.20am this morning.

The alarm was raised by a neighbour who heard shouting. Gardai, who were first on the scene, made several attempts to get into the house but were beaten back by the flames and smoke.

Firefighters, who were also on the scene with minutes, found the bodies of the victims in an upstairs bedroom but efforts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful.

The bodies were removed to the hospital, where post mortems will be carried out later today.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but gardaí say early indications are that it was accidental.

The house, which has been completely destroyed, has been sealed off pending a technical examination.

The mayor of Tralee, Councillor Grace Kelly, said the local community was deeply upset by the deaths.

“The people in Tralee are devastated. It’s quite a well-known estate in town that they lived in with a lot of young families and a very community orientated area. There’s a sense of despair. It’s so tragic.”
